The weather in Haines City, Florida, has been especially warm this winter. But unless you own a heater, you’ve likely skipped on taking a dip in your pool. With the spring finally here, many homeowners will start to prepare their pools for the hotter temperatures. Here are five tips on how to prepare your pool for swimming:

Stock Up On Pool Tools

Stocking up on swimming goggles and inflatable toys is a good idea. But to take care of your pool properly throughout the spring and summer months, you need the right tools for the job, including:

  • Leaf scooper
  • Algaecide
  • Pool brush
  • Pool hose
  • Pool testing kit
  • Pool vacuum
  • Stabilizer
  • Super shock chlorine

Shock Your Pool

To clean your pool’s water, you’ll need to use a mixture of three chemicals: algaecide, stabilizer and super shock chlorine. The amount you use will depend on how dirty your pool is and how much you’ve maintained it through the winter. These pool chemicals are strong, so make sure you’re following the instructions on their respective labels.

Run Your Pump and Filter

If you haven’t already done so, clean your pool’s filter. Once you’ve added the mixture of chemicals into the pool, run the pump for 24 hours to filter the water and to disperse the chemicals throughout it evenly. Remember that you should only run your pump for a maximum of 12 hours per day once your pool is clean. Otherwise, you’ll waste electricity.

Test Your Pool’s Water

To test the level of chemicals in your pool, you’ll need to purchase a test kit. Remember to always test the chemical levels after backwashing the filter. Follow the instructions on the kits to perform the tests and add the recommended amount of acid or chlorine afterward. Once your pool’s water has passed the test, it’s ready to swim in.

As with your HVAC system, it’s always a good idea to invest in professional maintenance on your pool. Doing so will ensure your swimming pool is in good working order and your family stays cool during the hottest days of the year.
