Experts recommend good ventilation to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
COVID-19 has made many of us nervous about basic needs that we previously took for granted as safe, such as shaking hands with strangers, grabbing a grocery cart, and breathing recirculated air. According to medical experts, proper ventilation is an essential step in preventing the spread of viruses like COVID-19. Airpliance wants you to feel safe in your home and workplace, so we want you to understand the role of good ventilation in protecting you from disease.
How to Ensure Proper Ventilation
This is Florida, so we need to be realistic: Airpliance does not expect you to turn off your AC and throw open all the windows. That might work in the cooler months but not for the rest of the year. However, increasing the amount of air pulled in from outdoors can help reduce the concentration of airborne contaminants indoors.
If it is safe to do so, open windows and doors to allow airflow. Sometimes there is too little wind or temperature difference between inside and outside to naturally stimulate airflow. When that’s the case, use a fan to help move the air around more. A whole-house fan is ideal, but a portable electric fan will work. Make use of cross-ventilation by opening the doors or windows at opposite sides of the building and leaving internal doors open.
When using fans to increase ventilation, make sure fans are not blowing air from person to person. Multiple fans can be used to pull air in one window and out another. A single fan should be placed so that it blows the air in the same direction that it is moving naturally.
While running your air conditioner, make sure the filter is the right size and installed properly. Change the filter regularly, and consider upgrading to a higher efficiency. Run the HVAC system fan continuously, if possible, and open the outside air intake (if your system has one).
Use Common Sense Precautions
While good ventilation is one thing you can do to decrease the spread of COVID-19, it is part of an overall safety plan that includes social distancing, wearing masks, frequent handwashing, and regular sanitizing of all surfaces. Airpliance, like you, wants to see this disease defeated soon, but to do so, we all need to do our part.
